Welcome back to another blog on the man we all love Winston Churchill. In this blog we are going to delve into the romance and passion of Winston's love life. We will explore the different pieces of technology that are around nowadays which could have assisted Churchill in his expeditions to find lovers and also perhaps find his perfect women. But before we do, I would like to take a moment. If you haven’t realised my name is Alex Davies. I am realistically your favourite writer on this blog bringing you nothing but cold hard facts and juicy gossip about Winston Churchill and technology. However, I have been going through probably the busiest period of my life with 55 credits worth of my final college degree being assessed in the upcoming 8 weeks. I don’t have time for distractions. Now while my colleagues are going through the same struggles I can guarantee they do not have the same commitment to writing blogs at 8pm on a Monday evening from the discomfort of a car in a McDonalds car-park. Now, saying this I must say I am not here out of my own desire, my household is going through a power-cut and just as I had completed the research for this blog and began to start writing bam. Pitch black - I can't see a thing and I have no internet. My mobile hotspot doesn’t like to work when it's needed and I find myself hungry and eager and desperate to write this blog. So I do the only logical thing. I take my laptop and get into my car, and drive like the wind to the nearest golden arches I can find. McDonalds has been my saviour for this blog. I would like to dedicate my appreciation for the golden crispy nuggets keeping alive and their wifi which satisfied my craving to eat and to write this wonder piece you are about to read. Let's get into it: Introduction Winston Churchill always held himself in high regard and believed that the women he was to start a relationship with would have to be up to his refined standards. At the start of the 1900s, Winston had become a global superstar, known for his valiant escape from a war prison during the Boer war. You can read about that here: Insert link Chuchill was not naive of his fame and the name he had created himself and it was for this reason that Churchill found himself on the prowl for the most audacious of girls. Despite not being necessarily the most handsome or athletic Churchill still had his sights set on the stars. Despite his lack of money, Churchill believed his “brio, swagger and prospects” made up for this and that women that came from money were contenders to be his match, (Purnell, 2015). How Churchill used to rate a womens suitability for marriage was as follows:

  1. If a woman's face was beautiful enough to send out a thousand ships she would qualify with ease

  2. If merely worth 200 ships, she would have to do, but only if absolutely necessary

  3. If her looks would at most justify launching a small gunboat she was completely out of the question

(Purnell, 2015)

Churchill’s view of women is a form of objectifying women which is unacceptable in this day and age, however it is a common issue still today. Ironically following these principles, Churchill was quite unsuccessful in his quest to find a compatible woman to start a relationship. What he found early on was that the women he was grafting were actually not interested in anything he talked about and they had nothing in common. So now Churchill was left looking for women that were incredibly SEXY and were actually interested in the SPAFF that was coming out of his mouth. His Wife Clementine

Thankfully in 1908 he met Clementine, the woman he went on to marry and she was actually interested in what he had to say, the perfect match. However before that he did have 3 failed proposals big OOFT. (International Churchill Society, n.d.) So lets picture this, we have a man who was a bit of a player looking for superstar models to marry however they didn't want to listen to him because they had nothing in common. Nowadays, especially with the pandemic dating apps are exploding. There are two very popular apps that I believe Churchill definitely would have a profile on if he were young, single and on the prowl. Tinder and Bumble. Dating Apps Nowadays, Tinder and Bumble are two of the most used dating apps worldwide. Tinder has a user base of 57 million in 2021, (Iqbal,2021), whilst Bumble boasts a user base of 100 million in 2021, (Curry, 2021). The principle of the apps are similar, asking users to swipe on certain profiles with a resulting in a simple YES / NO. However, the key difference between Tinder and Bumbles features is that Bumble only allows for the women to message first and Bumble also incorporates user interests. Despite there being a minor difference in the functionality of the apps, the reputation of the apps and the relationships that are seeked between the apps are quite different. Some of the common perceptions of the two apps are; Tinder is an app for hook-ups, deciding if you want to pursue something with someone based on a quick chat and the looks of the person based on the profile, (Minor, 2020). This app would have perfectly suited Churchill during his phase of looking for women based purely on looks. We went through some serious effort to make Churchill a profile that we felt most represented his womaniser persona:

Bumble meanwhile has a reputation of users that are looking for more long-term relationships. Bumble allows for users to see profiles that have similar interests and therefore allows for users to make well informed decisions before giving a profile a YES swipe, (Minor,2020). Bumble is great for empowering women and gives them an opportunity to make the first move. As mentioned, Churchill struggled to find a compatible partner due to not a lack of attractability but a lack of similar interests. Bumble would ensure Churchill would be able to make more informed decisions and be able to find women that actually shared his love of foreign affairs and politics.

Which app would Churchill have found Clementine:

The first encounter between Winston and Clementine was at a dance in 1904. Clementine was not impressed with Churchill as he didn’t ask her to dance and for probably the only time in his life didn’t utter a word to her. It was just by luck that their paths crossed again in 1908 when Clementine attended a dinner as a substitute for a member of her family who fell ill the night before, (Blakemore, 2018). Back then women making the first move would have been abnormal, this was because women were less empowered. However, Clementine was a woman with a strong personality she probably would have favoured the Bumble over Tinder. It could have resulted in their first encounter on Bumble not being as disastrous as it was in 1904 as Clementine would make the first move.

With Churchill’s initial naivety and fame going to his head, during his mid-twenties I will presume that Churchill will have found himself on Tinder chasing young ones. He would have definitely got caught up in the thrill of the chase and the hookups with stunning women. I reckon the three women he would’ve first proposed to, who all declined, he would’ve found on Tinder.

However, once he had copped Tinder was giving him matches whom he had nothing in common with he would have made the switch over to Bumble. Here, he and Clementine would have crossed paths and swiped RIGHT (In a perfect world).

Would Churchill have been a bumble or a tinder man? Maybe he was more of an Omegle man, we’ll never know. But I see it written in the stars he and Clementine would have been such a Bumble couple. What do you think?

This will be my final blog and it’s been a pleasure to write with the Take Me To Churchill team. Thank you for reading and for all the support! References
